Taylor, Texas is a city located in Williamson County, Texas, United States. It is the county seat of Williamson County and is located about 30 miles northeast of Austin. The population of Taylor was 14,617 at the 2010 census, up from 8,148 at the 2000 census.

History

The area that is now Taylor was first settled in the early 1840s by a group of German immigrants. The town was originally named Taylorsville, after Edward Taylor, a local landowner. In 1876, the town was renamed Taylor after the post office was established. The town was incorporated in 1892.
In the early 1900s, Taylor was a major center for cotton production and processing. The town was home to several cotton gins and a cottonseed oil mill. The town also had a large number of businesses, including a bank, a hotel, a newspaper, and a variety of stores.

Geography

Taylor is located in central Williamson County at 30°37'17" North, 97°25'45" West (30.621445, -97.429093). It is bordered to the north by the city of Thrall, to the east by the city of Hutto, to the south by the city of Granger, and to the west by the city of Coupland.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.2 square miles (21.2 km2), all of it land.

The economy of Taylor is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to several large agricultural operations, including a large cotton farm and a large dairy farm. The city is also home to several manufacturing companies, including a large furniture manufacturer and a large plastics manufacturer.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 14,617 people, 4,945 households, and 3,541 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,788.2 people per square mile (692.2/km2). There were 5,323 housing units at an average density of 651.2 per square mile (251.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 74.2% White, 8.3% African American, 0.6% Native American, 0.5% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 14.2% from other races, and 2.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 28.3% of the population.
There were 4,945 households, out of which 37.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 14.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.2% were non-families. 23.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.93 and the average family size was 3.48.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 30.2% under the age of 18, 9.7% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 11.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $37,890, and the median income for a family was $45,890. Males had a median income of $31,945 versus $25,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,890. About 11.2% of families and 14.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 19.2% of those under age 18 and 11.2% of those age 65 or over.
