Shoreacres Summary
Shoreacres is a city located in Harris County, Texas, United States. It is part of the Houston–The Woodlands–Sugar Land metropolitan area. The population was 1,717 at the 2010 census.
History
Shoreacres was founded in the early 1900s by a group of investors from Houston. The city was named after the Shore family, who owned a large tract of land in the area. The city was incorporated in 1954.
Geography
Shoreacres is located at 29°37′17″N 95°2′17″W (29.6214, -95.0381). It is situated along the western shore of Galveston Bay, just south of the city of La Porte.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.3 square miles (3.4 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Shoreacres is a small, residential community with no major industries. The city is home to a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a gas station, and a few restaurants.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 1,717 people, 645 households, and 486 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,323.2 people per square mile (510.7/km2). There were 690 housing units at an average density of 527.3 per square mile (203.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 92.45% White, 0.35% African American, 0.12% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 5.90% from other races, and 0.94% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 11.45% of the population.
There were 645 households, out of which 37.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.3% were non-families. 21.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.67 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 11.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $50,000, and the median income for a family was $54,375. Males had a median income of $41,250 versus $30,000 for females. The per capita income for the city was $21,945. About 4.2% of families and 5.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
