The area that is now Northlake was first settled in the late 1800s. The town was originally known as "Cross Roads" due to its location at the intersection of two major roads. In the early 1900s, the town was renamed "Northlake" after the nearby lake.
The city was officially incorporated in 1961. In the 1970s, the city experienced rapid growth due to its proximity to Dallas and Fort Worth.

The racial makeup of the city was 81.45% White, 8.45% African American, 0.45% Native American, 0.45% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 6.45% from other races, and 2.60% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 13.45% of the population.
There were 2,845 households, out of which 37.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.2% were non-families. 22.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 6.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.71 and the average family size was 3.17.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 33.2% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 9.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
