Monahans is a city located in Ward County, Texas, United States. It is the county seat of Ward County and is located in the western part of the state. The population was 6,953 at the 2010 census.
History
Monahans was founded in 1881 when the Texas and Pacific Railway was built through the area. The city was named after the nearby Monahans Sandhills, which were named after the Monahans family, who were early settlers in the area. The city was incorporated in 1909.
Geography
Monahans is located at 31°32'25" North, 102°50'17" West (31.540278, -102.838333). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.2 square miles (13.4 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Monahans is the economic center of Ward County. The city is home to several businesses, including oil and gas production, manufacturing, and retail. The city is also home to the Monahans Sandhills State Park, which attracts visitors from all over the state.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 6,817 people, 2,541 households, and 1,717 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,323.2 people per square mile (510.7/km2). There were 2,945 housing units at an average density of 567.2 per square mile (219.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 75.45% White, 1.45% African American, 0.76% Native American, 0.20% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 19.90% from other races, and 2.21% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 37.45% of the population.
There were 2,541 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 13.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.2% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.63 and the average family size was 3.21.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 28.7% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $25,938, and the median income for a family was $31,944. Males had a median income of $27,917 versus $17,917 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,845.
