Kirby Summary
Kirby is a city located in Bexar County, Texas, United States. It is part of the San Antonio–New Braunfels Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 6,715 at the 2010 census.
History
Kirby was founded in 1881 by the Kirby family, who were among the first settlers in the area. The town was named after the family's patriarch, John Kirby. The town was originally a farming community, but it began to grow in the early 20th century when the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway was built through the area. The railroad brought new businesses and industries to the area, and the population began to grow.
In the 1950s, the city of San Antonio began to expand, and many of the residents of Kirby moved to the larger city. This caused the population of Kirby to decline, and by the 1970s, the population had dropped to just over 1,000.
In the 1980s, the city began to experience a resurgence, as new businesses and industries moved into the area. The population began to grow again, and by the 2010 census, the population had reached 6,715.
Geography
Kirby is located at 29°25'25" North, 98°30'17" West (29.423, -98.504). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Kirby is home to a variety of businesses and industries, including manufacturing, retail, and healthcare. The city is also home to several large employers, including the University of Texas at San Antonio, the San Antonio International Airport, and the South Texas Medical Center.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 6,715 people, 2,541 households, and 1,845 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,611.2 people per square mile (619.7/km2). There were 2,845 housing units at an average density of 683.2 per square mile (264.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 68.2% White, 5.2% African American, 0.7% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 22.7% from other races, and 2.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 63.2% of the population.
There were 2,541 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 17.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.2% were non-families. 22.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.67 and the average family size was 3.14.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 9.7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $37,917, and the median income for a family was $41,917. Males had a median income of $30,917 versus $25,917 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,917. About 11.2% of families and 14.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 19.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
