Hays Summary

Hays, Texas is a city located in Hays County, Texas, United States. It is the county seat of Hays County and is located on the Edwards Plateau in Central Texas. The population was 20,011 at the 2010 census. It is the fifth-largest city in the Austin–Round Rock–San Marcos metropolitan area.

History

Hays was founded in 1848 by John Coffee Hays, a Texas Ranger and Mexican-American War veteran. The city was named after him. The city was originally located in Travis County, but was moved to Hays County in 1873.
The city was a major stop on the Chisholm Trail, and was the site of several battles during the Civil War. In 1867, the city was incorporated and the first post office was established.

Geography

Hays is located at 30°3'25" North, 97°57'17" West (30.056944, -97.954722). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.2 square miles (21.2 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Hays is a major economic center for the region. The city is home to several major employers, including the Hays Consolidated Independent School District, Seton Medical Center Hays, and the Hays County government. The city is also home to several retail stores, restaurants, and other businesses.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 20,011 people, 6,845 households, and 4,845 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,425.3 people per square mile (936.2/km2). There were 7,521 housing units at an average density of 917.2 per square mile (354.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 75.2% White, 8.3% African American, 0.7% Native American, 0.9% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 12.7% from other races, and 2.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 33.2% of the population.
There were 6,845 households, out of which 36.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 14.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.7% were non-families. 25.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.86 and the average family size was 3.45.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 28.7% under the age of 18, 10.2% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 20.7% from 45 to 64, and 11.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $41,919, and the median income for a family was $48,917. Males had a median income of $32,845 versus $25,836 for females. The per capita income for the city was $19,945. About 11.2% of families and 14.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 19.2% of those under age 18 and 8.7% of those age 65 or over.
