History
Pecos County was established in 1871, and was named for the Pecos River, which runs through the county. The area was originally inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Apache, Comanche, and Kiowa. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the late 1800s, and the county was officially organized in 1891.
The county was an important part of the cattle industry in the late 1800s and early 1900s, and Fort Stockton was an important stop on the San Antonio-El Paso Road. The county was also an important part of the oil industry, and the first oil well was drilled in the county in 1921.
