Alpine is a city located in Brewster County, Texas, United States. It is the county seat of Brewster County and is the largest city in the Big Bend region of West Texas. History

Alpine was founded in 1882 as a railroad town, when the Galveston, Harrisburg and San Antonio Railway was built through the area. The town was named after the nearby Alpine Mountains. The town was incorporated in 1885 and was designated as the county seat of Brewster County in 1887.
In the early 1900s, Alpine became a center for ranching and farming. The town was also a stop on the Southern Pacific Railroad. In the 1920s, the town began to grow as a tourist destination, due to its proximity to the Davis Mountains and Big Bend National Park.

Geography

Alpine is located in the Trans-Pecos region of Texas, near the Rio Grande and the Davis Mountains. The city is situated at an elevation of 4,475 feet (1,364 m). The city has a total area of 5.2 square miles (13.4 km2), all of which is land.

Alpine has a semi-arid climate, with hot summers and mild winters. The average annual temperature is 64 °F (18 °C). The average annual precipitation is 16.5 inches (420 mm).

Economy

Alpine's economy is largely based on tourism, ranching, and farming. The city is home to Sul Ross State University, which is a major employer in the area. The university also serves as a major cultural and educational center for the region.
