Mebane Summary
Mebane is a city located in Alamance County, North Carolina, United States. It is part of the Burlington, North Carolina Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 11,393 at the 2010 census.
History
Mebane was founded in 1881 by Alexander Mebane, a former Confederate soldier and local landowner. The city was named after him. The city was incorporated in 1881 and was the first town in Alamance County to be incorporated.
Mebane was originally a small farming community, but it has grown significantly since the 1950s. The city has become a major industrial center, with many large companies such as Honda, Volvo, and Caterpillar having plants in the area.

Mebane is located at 36°04′N 79°20′W (36.07, -79.33). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.3 square miles (21.5 km2), of which 8.2 square miles (21.3 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) (1.17%) is water.

The racial makeup of the city was 68.2% White, 24.2% African American, 0.4% Native American, 2.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 2.7% from other races, and 2.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.7% of the population.
There were 4,541 households, out of which 28.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.2% were married couples living together, 14.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.2% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 3.05.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 15.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $37,845, and the median income for a family was $45,945. Males had a median income of $31,919 versus $25,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $19,945.
