Lincolnton is a city located in Lincoln County, North Carolina, United States. It is the county seat of Lincoln County and is located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The population was 10,683 at the 2010 census.
History
Lincolnton was founded in 1786 and named after General Benjamin Lincoln, a Revolutionary War hero. The city was incorporated in 1868 and is the county seat of Lincoln County. The city was originally known as "Lincoln Town" and was the site of the first county courthouse.
The city was an important center of commerce and industry in the 19th century. It was home to several cotton mills, a furniture factory, and a number of other businesses. The city was also the site of the first railroad in the county, the Lincolnton and Rutherford Railroad, which was built in 1855.
Geography
Lincolnton is located at 35°29′N 81°14′W (35.48, -81.23). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.2 square miles (21.2 km2), of which 8.1 square miles (21.0 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) (1.25%) is water.

Lincolnton is home to a variety of businesses and industries. The city is home to several manufacturing companies, including a furniture factory, a textile mill, and a plastics plant. The city is also home to several retail stores, restaurants, and other businesses.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 10,683 people, 4,093 households, and 2,717 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,323.2 people per square mile (510.7/km2). There were 4,521 housing units at an average density of 559.2 per square mile (215.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 73.2% White, 19.3% African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 4.2% from other races, and 2.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.2% of the population.
There were 4,093 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.2% were married couples living together, 17.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.2% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 15.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $32,813, and the median income for a family was $40,945. Males had a median income of $30,917 versus $22,917 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,845. About 13.2% of families and 16.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 22.2% of those under age 18 and 14.2% of those age 65 or over.
