History
The area that is now North Carolina was inhabited by Native Americans for thousands of years before the arrival of Europeans. The first Europeans to explore the area were Spanish explorers in the 16th century. The first permanent European settlement in the area was established in 1585 by Sir Walter Raleigh. The area was part of the Province of Carolina, which was established in 1663. The Province of Carolina was divided into North Carolina and South Carolina in 1712.
North Carolina was one of the original 13 colonies that declared independence from Great Britain in 1776. During the American Revolution, North Carolina was the site of several battles, including the Battle of Moore's Creek Bridge and the Battle of Guilford Courthouse. After the war, North Carolina became the 12th state to ratify the United States Constitution in 1789.
