Dobson is located at 36°25'25" North, 80°45'45" West (36.423, -80.763). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.3 square miles (3.4 km2), all of it land.

Dobson is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a pharmacy, and a few restaurants. The town is also home to a number of manufacturing companies, including a furniture factory, a textile mill, and a plastics plant. The town is also home to a number of small farms, which produce a variety of crops, including corn, soybeans, and tobacco.

As of the 2010 census, there were 2,919 people, 1,093 households, and 745 families residing in the town. The population density was 2,232.3 people per square mile (862.2/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 87.2% White, 9.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.7% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 15.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.2% were non-families. 26.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.13.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.7% who were 65 years of age or older.
