According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.2 square miles (21.2 km2), of which 8.1 square miles (21.0 km2) is land and 0.1 square mile (0.2 km2) (1.17%) is water.
History
Conover was founded in 1891 by the Catawba Valley Railroad. The city was named after the railroad's president, J.H. Conover. The railroad was built to connect the towns of Hickory and Newton.
The city was incorporated in 1895 and has grown steadily since then. In the early 1900s, Conover was a major center for the furniture industry. The city was home to several furniture factories, including the Conover Chair Company, which was founded in 1902.

As of the census of 2010, there were 8,165 people, 3,093 households, and 2,092 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,006.2 people per square mile (388.7/km2). There were 3,309 housing units at an average density of 407.7 per square mile (157.4/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 79.2% White, 14.3% African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 3.3% from other races, and 2.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.2% of the population.
There were 3,093 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 15.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 14.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
