Halifax County Summary

Halifax County is located in the northeastern part of North Carolina, and is bordered by the counties of Northampton, Nash, Edgecombe, Warren, and Vance. History

Halifax County was formed in 1758 from Edgecombe County. It was named for George Montagu-Dunk, 2nd Earl of Halifax, who was the President of the Board of Trade from 1748 to 1761. The county was originally part of the Tuscarora Indian Nation, and the first European settlers arrived in the area in the early 1700s.
During the American Revolution, Halifax County was the site of several battles, including the Battle of Halifax Courthouse in 1776. The county was also the site of the Halifax Resolves, which was the first official call for independence from Great Britain.
