West Point Summary
West Point is a city located in Davis County, Utah, United States. It is part of the Ogden-Clearfield, Utah Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 8,286 at the 2010 census, up from 5,624 at the 2000 census.
History
West Point was first settled in 1848 by a group of Mormon pioneers led by William W. Phelps. The settlement was originally known as "Phelps' Settlement" and was located in what is now known as West Point. The settlement was later renamed "West Point" in 1852.
The city was incorporated in 1868 and has since grown to become one of the largest cities in Davis County. West Point is home to a variety of businesses, including a large industrial park, and is a popular destination for outdoor recreation.
Geography
West Point is located in northern Davis County at 41°10'17" North, 112°2'17" West (41.171445, -112.038118). It is bordered to the north by Clearfield, to the east by Clinton, to the south by Sunset, and to the west by Roy.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.2 square miles (21.2 km2), all of it land.
Economy
West Point is home to a variety of businesses, including a large industrial park. The city is also a popular destination for outdoor recreation, with several parks and trails in the area.
The city is home to several large employers, including Hill Air Force Base, which is located just south of the city. Other major employers include ATK, a defense contractor, and the Davis Applied Technology College.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 5,624 people, 1,845 households, and 1,521 families residing in the city. The population density was 686.3 people per square mile (265.2/km2). There were 1,945 housing units at an average density of 237.2 per square mile (91.5/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 91.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.7% Native American, 1.3% Asian, 0.2% Pacific Islander, 4.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.2% of the population.
There were 1,845 households, out of which 44.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 66.2% were married couples living together, 9.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 20.7% were non-families. 16.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 5.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.05 and the average family size was 3.45.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 33.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 7.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $50,945, and the median income for a family was $54,945. Males had a median income of $41,945 versus $27,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $19,945. About 4.2% of families and 5.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
