Toquerville Summary
Toquerville is a small town located in Washington County, Utah, United States. It is situated along Interstate 15, about 20 miles north of St. George and about 30 miles south of Cedar City. The population was 1,072 at the 2010 census.
History
Toquerville was first settled in 1858 by a group of Mormon pioneers led by John Toone. The town was named after Toone, who was a leader in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The town was originally located in Iron County, but was moved to Washington County in 1882.
Geography
Toquerville is located at 37°14'17" North, 113°25'17" West (37.238, -113.421). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.9 square miles, all of it land.
Economy
Toquerville is a small, rural community with a primarily agricultural economy. The town is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a gas station, and a few restaurants. The town also has a post office and a library.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 1,072 people, 339 households, and 279 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,093.3 people per square mile (422.7/km²). There were 359 housing units at an average density of 369.2 per square mile (142.7/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 97.7% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 0.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.2% of the population.
There were 339 households out of which 44.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 71.3% were married couples living together, 6.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 18.3% were non-families. 15.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.17 and the average family size was 3.54.
In the town, the population was spread out with 33.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 11.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females, there were 103.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.7 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $41,250, and the median income for a family was $45,000. Males had a median income of $31,250 versus $20,000 for females.
