Murray Summary

Murray is a city located in Salt Lake County, Utah, United States. It is part of the Salt Lake City metropolitan area. The population was 46,746 at the 2010 census, making it the state's fifth-largest city. Murray is the home of the Intermountain Medical Center, a hospital owned by Intermountain Healthcare.

History

The area that would become Murray was first settled in 1847 by a group of Mormon pioneers led by John Holladay. The area was originally known as South Cottonwood, and was later renamed Holladay. In 1872, the area was incorporated as the Town of Holladay. In 1881, the town was renamed Murray after territorial governor Eli Murray.

Geography

Murray is located at 40°38'37" North, 111°53'10" West (40.643500, -111.886111). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.2 square miles (21.2 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Murray is home to several large employers, including Intermountain Healthcare, the University of Utah, and the Salt Lake County government. The city also has a thriving retail sector, with several large shopping centers and numerous restaurants.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 46,746 people, 16,845 households, and 11,845 families residing in the city. The population density was 5,711.2 people per square mile (2,212.2/km2). There were 17,845 housing units at an average density of 2,179.3 per square mile (841.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 79.2% White, 2.2% African American, 0.7% Native American, 4.3% Asian, 0.2% Pacific Islander, 10.7% from other races, and 2.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 20.8% of the population.
There were 16,845 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 24.9% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.75 and the average family size was 3.31.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 10.3% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 12.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.8 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $50,813, and the median income for a family was $58,824. Males had a median income of $40,821 versus $30,843 for females. The per capita income for the city was $23,936. About 6.2% of families and 8.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 11.2% of those under age 18 and 4.7% of those age 65 or over.
