Eureka Summary

Eureka is a small town located in Juab County, Utah, United States. It is situated in the western part of the state, approximately 80 miles south of Salt Lake City. The town was founded in 1864 and is the oldest continuously inhabited settlement in Juab County. The population of Eureka was 1,521 at the 2010 census.

History

Eureka was founded in 1864 by a group of Mormon settlers led by William H. Dame. The settlers were sent to the area by Brigham Young to establish a settlement in the area. The town was originally named "Eureka City" after the Greek word for "I have found it". The settlers built a fort and a sawmill, and the town quickly grew.
In 1866, the town was renamed "Eureka" and was incorporated in 1872. The town was an important stop on the Pony Express route and was also a major stop on the transcontinental railroad.

Geography

Eureka is located in western Juab County, approximately 80 miles south of Salt Lake City. The town is situated at an elevation of 5,890 feet above sea level. The area is mostly mountainous, with the Wasatch Range to the east and the Tintic Mountains to the west.
