Schertz Summary
Schertz is a city located in Guadalupe and Bexar counties in the U.S. state of Texas. It is part of the San Antonio–New Braunfels Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 34,883 at the 2010 census, up from 28,465 at the 2000 census.
History
Schertz was founded in 1876 by German settlers who named the city after their hometown of Schertz, Germany. The city was incorporated in 1952.
Geography
Schertz is located in northeastern Bexar County and northwestern Guadalupe County at 29°32′N 98°15′W (29.5355, -98.2520). It is bordered to the north by Selma, to the east by Cibolo, to the south by Universal City, and to the west by Converse.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 16.2sqmi, of which 16.1sqmi is land and 0.1sqmi (0.62%) is water.
Economy
Schertz is home to a number of large employers, including Randolph Air Force Base, the Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City Independent School District, and the Schertz Economic Development Corporation. The city is also home to a number of small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 28,465 people, 9,717 households, and 7,817 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,769.2 people per square mile (683.2/km^2). There were 10,072 housing units at an average density of 624.3 per square mile (240.9/km^2). The racial makeup of the city was 79.17% White, 5.45% African American, 0.60% Native American, 1.45% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 10.45% from other races, and 2.70% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 28.90% of the population.
There were 9,717 households, out of which 46.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.7% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 20.3% were non-families. 16.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 4.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.90 and the average family size was 3.27.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 30.3% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 33.2% from 25 to 44, 20.7% from 45 to 64, and 7.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $54,945, and the median income for a family was $60,845. Males had a median income of $41,845 versus $30,845 for females. The per capita income for the city was $21,945. About 4.2% of families and 5.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.3% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.
