Roxton is a small town located in Lamar County, Texas, United States. It is situated on the banks of the Red River, approximately 75 miles northeast of Dallas. The population of Roxton was 1,072 at the 2010 census.
History
The area that is now Roxton was first settled in the late 1840s by a group of settlers from Tennessee. The town was originally known as “Red River”, but was later renamed Roxton in honor of a local family. The town was officially incorporated in 1887.
In the early 1900s, Roxton was a thriving agricultural community, with cotton, corn, and wheat being the main crops. The town also had a number of businesses, including a cotton gin, a grist mill, and a blacksmith shop.
In the 1920s, the town began to decline as the Great Depression hit the area. Many of the businesses closed and the population began to dwindle. However, the town was able to survive and by the 1950s, the population had begun to increase again.
