Palmview Summary
Palmview is a city located in Hidalgo County, Texas, United States. The population was estimated to be 8,912 in 2019. It is part of the McAllen–Edinburg–Mission Metropolitan Statistical Area.
Geography
Palmview is located at 26°14'17" North, 98°17'17" West (26.238, -98.288). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all of it land.
History
Palmview was founded in the early 1950s by a group of Mexican-American farmers. The city was named after the palm trees that grew in the area. The city was incorporated in 1959.
Economy
Palmview's economy is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The city is home to several large farms, including the Rio Grande Valley Citrus Growers Association, which produces oranges, grapefruit, and other citrus fruits. The city also has a number of tourist attractions, including the Palmview Nature Center, which offers bird watching and other outdoor activities.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 6,945 people, 2,072 households, and 1,717 families residing in the city. The population density was 3,093.3 people per square mile (1,192.2/km2). There were 2,232 housing units at an average density of 1,000.3 per square mile (386.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 79.2% White, 0.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.1% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 18.7% from other races, and 1.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 97.2% of the population.
There were 2,072 households, out of which 46.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.2% were married couples living together, 14.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 17.2% were non-families. 14.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 6.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.35 and the average family size was 3.71.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 33.2% under the age of 18, 11.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 17.7% from 45 to 64, and 9.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 29 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $20,938, and the median income for a family was $22,917. Males had a median income of $17,917 versus $14,917 for females. The per capita income for the city was $8,845. About 28.2% of families and 32.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 41.2% of those under age 18 and 28.2% of those age 65 or over.
