History
Palmhurst was founded in the early 1900s by a group of settlers from Mexico. The settlers were attracted to the area due to its fertile soil and abundant water supply. The city was originally named “Palmhurst” after the palm trees that grew in the area.
The city was incorporated in 1948 and has since grown to become a thriving community. The city is home to a variety of businesses, including a number of restaurants, retail stores, and medical facilities.
Geography
Palmhurst is located at 26°14′N 98°17′W (26.23, -98.28). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Palmhurst’s economy is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The city is home to a number of farms and ranches, as well as a number of tourist attractions, such as the Palmhurst Nature Center and the Palmhurst Golf Course.
The city is also home to a number of businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and medical facilities.

As of the census of 2000, there were 5,817 people, 1,845 households, and 1,521 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,619.3 people per square mile (1,009.2/km2). There were 1,945 housing units at an average density of 872.2 per square mile (336.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 79.17% White, 0.17% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.17% Pacific Islander, 18.50% from other races, and 1.67% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 97.50% of the population.
There were 1,845 households, out of which 44.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.2% were married couples living together, 14.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 19.2% were non-families. 16.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 7.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.14 and the average family size was 3.54.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 32.2% under the age of 18, 10.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 19.2% from 45 to 64, and 10.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 31 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $25,938, and the median income for a family was $27,917. Males had a median income of $21,964 versus $17,917 for females. The per capita income for the city was $10,917. About 24.2% of families and 27.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 33.2% of those under age 18 and 24.2% of those age 65 or over.
