New London was founded in 1873 by a group of settlers from London, England. The town was originally called London, but the name was changed to New London in 1876 to avoid confusion with the city of London, Texas. The town was incorporated in 1881 and the first post office was established in 1882.
The town grew rapidly in the late 19th century and early 20th century due to the discovery of oil in the area. The first oil well was drilled in 1901 and the town quickly became a center for oil production. The population of New London peaked at around 5,000 in the 1920s.
The town suffered a major setback in 1937 when a natural gas explosion destroyed the local school and killed more than 300 people. The tragedy was later immortalized in the song “The New London School Explosion” by country music singer-songwriter Red Sovine.
