Loraine Summary

Loraine, Texas is a small town located in Mitchell County, Texas. It is situated in the rolling hills of the Texas Hill Country, about 90 miles northwest of Abilene. The town was founded in 1881 and named after the daughter of a local rancher. The population of Loraine was estimated to be 545 in 2019.

History

Loraine was founded in 1881 by rancher William Loraine. He named the town after his daughter, Loraine. The town was originally a stop on the Texas and Pacific Railway. The railroad brought settlers to the area, and the town grew quickly. By the early 1900s, Loraine had become a thriving community with a population of over 1,000.
The town was home to several businesses, including a bank, a hotel, a general store, and a cotton gin. The town also had a school, a post office, and a newspaper.
In the early 1900s, Loraine was a center for the cattle industry. The town was home to several large ranches, and the local economy was largely based on the cattle industry.
In the 1920s, the town began to decline. The Great Depression hit the town hard, and many of the businesses closed. The population of Loraine dropped to just over 500 by the 1940s.
In the 1950s, the town began to experience a resurgence. The local economy was bolstered by the oil industry, and the population began to grow again. By the 1970s, the population had grown to over 1,000.
