Jamaica Beach is a small city located in Galveston County, Texas, United States. It is situated on the western end of Galveston Island, and is part of the Galveston–Houston metropolitan area. The city has a population of 1,845 as of the 2010 census.

History

Jamaica Beach was founded in the 1950s as a resort community. It was originally developed by the Jamaica Beach Corporation, which was owned by the family of former Texas Governor John Connally. The city was incorporated in 1961.

Geography

Jamaica Beach is located at 29°17′N 94°51′W (29.28, -94.85). It is situated on the western end of Galveston Island, and is part of the Galveston–Houston metropolitan area. The city has a total area of 1.3 square miles (3.4 km2), all of which is land.

Economy

Jamaica Beach is primarily a residential community, with a small commercial district. The city is home to several restaurants, bars, and shops. The city also has a marina, which provides access to the Gulf of Mexico.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,845 people, 817 households, and 517 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,420.8 people per square mile (548.7/km2). There were 1,039 housing units at an average density of 797.7 per square mile (307.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 94.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 2.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.2% of the population.
There were 817 households, out of which 22.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 8.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.26 and the average family size was 2.81.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 19.2% under the age of 18, 5.7% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 32.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 45 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $50,938, and the median income for a family was $60,000. Males had a median income of $41,250 versus $30,000 for females. The per capita income for the city was $30,945. About 4.2% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.3% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
