Hawley Summary

Hawley, Texas is a small town located in Jones County, Texas, United States. It is situated on the banks of the Brazos River, approximately 25 miles northwest of Abilene. The population of Hawley was 1,072 at the 2010 census.

History

The area around Hawley was first settled in the late 1800s by ranchers and farmers. The town was founded in 1881 and named after a local rancher, William Hawley. The town was incorporated in 1885 and quickly became a center for the local agricultural industry. The town was also home to a number of businesses, including a cotton gin, a blacksmith shop, a general store, and a hotel.
In the early 1900s, Hawley began to experience a period of growth and prosperity. The town was connected to the railroad in 1906, which allowed for the transportation of goods and people. This led to an increase in population and the establishment of new businesses.
In the 1920s, Hawley experienced a period of decline due to the Great Depression. The population decreased and many businesses closed. However, the town was able to recover in the 1940s and 1950s due to the growth of the oil and gas industry in the area.
