Grapeland Summary
Grapeland is a small town located in Houston County, Texas, United States. It is situated in the southeastern part of the state, about 90 miles north of Houston. The population was 1,072 at the 2010 census.
History
Grapeland was founded in 1873 by a group of settlers from Alabama. The town was named after the abundance of wild grapes that grew in the area. The first post office was established in 1875.
Grapeland was incorporated in 1891 and the first mayor was J.W. Smith. The town was a center of commerce for the surrounding area and had a variety of businesses, including a cotton gin, a grist mill, a sawmill, and a blacksmith shop.
In the early 1900s, Grapeland was a thriving community with a population of over 1,000. The town had a variety of stores, churches, and schools. The town also had a movie theater, a hotel, and a bank.
Geography
Grapeland is located at 31°14'25" North, 95°37'17" West (31.240278, -95.621389). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Grapeland's economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms that produce cotton, corn, soybeans, and other crops. The town also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 1,072 people, 431 households, and 287 families residing in the town. The population density was 890.2 people per square mile (344.3/km2). There were 486 housing units at an average density of 400.2 per square mile (154.4/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 73.2% White, 22.2% African American, 0.7% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.2% of the population.
There were 431 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.3% were married couples living together, 14.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 17.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 20.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 86.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $25,000, and the median income for a family was $30,000. Males had a median income of $27,500 versus $19,375 for females. The per capita income for the town was $13,945. About 17.2% of families and 20.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 28.2% of those under age 18 and 16.2% of those age 65 or over.
