The area that is now Friona was first settled in the late 19th century by ranchers and farmers. The town was founded in 1906 and named after a local rancher, F.M. Friona. The town was incorporated in 1910 and has since grown to become the largest town in Parmer County.

Geography

Friona is located at 34°38'25" North, 102°30'25" West (34.640278, -102.506944). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 2.2 square miles, all of it land.

The economy of Friona is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several large farms and ranches, as well as a number of smaller family-owned farms. The town is also home to several businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a bank, and a number of restaurants.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 3,844 people, 1,521 households, and 1,039 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,741.2 people per square mile (671.3/km²). There were 1,717 housing units at an average density of 776.2 per square mile (299.7/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 75.45% White, 0.47% African American, 0.68% Native American, 0.13% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 21.45% from other races, and 2.29% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 44.45% of the population.
There were 1,521 households out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.2% were married couples living together, 12.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.2% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the town, the population was spread out with 28.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $25,938, and the median income for a family was $31,964. Males had a median income of $25,938 versus $17,917 for females. The per capita income for the town was $13,845. About 17.2% of families and 20.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 25.2% of those under age 18 and 16.2% of those age 65 or over.
