Fabens Summary
Fabens is a census-designated place (CDP) in El Paso County, Texas, United States. The population was 6,031 at the 2010 census. It is part of the El Paso Metropolitan Statistical Area.
History
Fabens was founded in 1883 by the Southern Pacific Railroad. The town was named after William Fabens, a railroad official. The town was incorporated in 1910 and had a population of 1,000 by 1920. The town was a major stop on the Southern Pacific Railroad and was a major shipping point for cattle and cotton.
Geography
Fabens is located at 31°45'25" North, 106°7'25" West (31.756944, -106.123611). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 8.3 square miles (21.5 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Fabens is a rural community with a strong agricultural economy. The town is home to several large farms and ranches, as well as a number of small businesses. The town is also home to a number of oil and gas production facilities.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 5,902 people, 1,845 households, and 1,521 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 712.2 people per square mile (275.2/km2). There were 2,068 housing units at an average density of 250.2/sq mi (96.5/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 79.2% White, 0.3% African American, 0.7% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 17.3% from other races, and 2.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 87.2% of the population.
There were 1,845 households, out of which 44.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.2% were married couples living together, 16.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 19.2% were non-families. 16.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 6.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.20 and the average family size was 3.58.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 33.2% under the age of 18, 10.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 19.7% from 45 to 64, and 9.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 30 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $20,917, and the median income for a family was $22,813. Males had a median income of $20,917 versus $17,917 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $8,945. About 28.2% of families and 33.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 43.2% of those under age 18 and 24.2% of those age 65 or over.
