Decatur, Texas is a city located in Wise County, Texas, United States. It is the county seat of Wise County and is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington metropolitan area. The population of Decatur was 6,042 at the 2010 census.
History
Decatur was founded in 1857 by settlers from Tennessee and Kentucky. The town was named after Stephen Decatur, a naval hero of the War of 1812. The town was incorporated in 1876 and the first mayor was elected in 1877.
Decatur was an important stop on the Chisholm Trail, which was used by cowboys to drive cattle from Texas to Kansas. The town was also a major stop on the Texas and Pacific Railway, which was completed in 1876.
Decatur was the site of a major battle during the Civil War. On October 8, 1862, Confederate forces under General Henry McCulloch attacked a Union force under General James Blunt. The Union forces were defeated and the town was burned.

Decatur is located at 33°14'45"N 97°33'45"W (33.245833, -97.5625). It is situated in the northwest corner of Wise County, approximately 40 miles northwest of Fort Worth.
The city has a total area of 8.2 square miles, all of which is land. The city is located in the rolling hills of North Central Texas. The terrain is mostly flat with some rolling hills.
