Cumby Summary

Cumby, Texas is a small town located in Hopkins County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,093 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Sulphur Springs, Texas Micropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Cumby was founded in 1881 by a group of settlers from Tennessee. The town was named after a local settler, William Cumby. The town was incorporated in 1884 and the first post office was established in 1885.
The town grew slowly but steadily over the years, and by the early 1900s, it had become a thriving agricultural community. The town was home to several cotton gins, a grist mill, and a sawmill. The town also had a bank, a hotel, and several stores.
In the 1920s, the town began to decline as the cotton industry declined. The Great Depression further weakened the town's economy, and by the 1940s, the population had dropped to just over 500.
The town began to recover in the 1950s, and by the 1960s, the population had grown to over 1,000. The town has remained relatively stable since then, and the population has remained around 1,000.
