History
Cuero was founded in 1873 by a group of German immigrants led by John J. Kleiber. The town was named after the Spanish word for “leather”, as the area was known for its abundance of wild hogs and cattle. Cuero was a major stop on the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway, which connected San Antonio to the Gulf Coast. The railway brought in new businesses and industries, and the town grew rapidly. By the early 1900s, Cuero had become a major center for the production of wool, cotton, and hides.
