Converse Summary

Converse, Texas is a small city located in Bexar County, Texas, United States. It is part of the San Antonio–New Braunfels Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city was founded in 1881 and incorporated in 1952. As of the 2010 census, the population of Converse was 18,198.

History

The area that is now Converse was originally inhabited by the Coahuiltecan Indians. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the early 1800s. The town was originally known as “Gibbs”, after the first settler, William Gibbs. In 1881, the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway built a line through the area, and the town was renamed “Converse” after the railroad’s chief engineer, Charles Converse.
The town grew slowly, and by the early 1900s, it had a population of around 200 people. In 1952, Converse was officially incorporated as a city. The population continued to grow, and by the 2000 census, it had reached 8,514.

Geography

Converse is located in Bexar County, Texas, at the intersection of Interstate 10 and Loop 1604. It is about 15 miles northeast of downtown San Antonio. The city has a total area of 8.3 square miles, all of which is land.
The terrain of Converse is mostly flat, with some rolling hills. The climate is subtropical, with hot summers and mild winters. The average annual temperature is 68°F, and the average annual precipitation is 33 inches.
