Colmesneil Summary

Colmesneil is a small town located in Tyler County, Texas, United States. It is situated on the western edge of the Angelina National Forest, about 25 miles northeast of Woodville. The population was 602 at the 2010 census.

History

Colmesneil was founded in 1882 by a group of settlers from the nearby town of Colmesneil. The town was named after the Colmesneil family, who had settled in the area in the early 1800s. The town was originally a farming community, but in the early 1900s, the lumber industry began to take off in the area. The town was incorporated in 1912, and the first mayor was J.W. Colmesneil.

Geography

Colmesneil is located at 30°45'25" North, 94°30'45" West (30.756944, -94.5125). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.

Economy

The economy of Colmesneil is largely based on the lumber industry. The town is home to several sawmills and wood-processing plants, as well as a number of small businesses. The town also has a few restaurants and stores.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 602 people, 246 households, and 166 families residing in the town. The population density was 845.3 people per square mile (326.2/km2). There were 279 housing units at an average density of 391.2 per square mile (150.7/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 92.36% White, 0.17% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 5.65% from other races, and 1.49% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.31% of the population.
There were 246 households, out of which 28.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 11.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.5% were non-families. 30.1% of all households were made up of individuals, and 17.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 19.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.2 males.
