Canyon Summary

Canyon, Texas is a city located in Randall County, Texas, United States. It is part of the Amarillo, Texas metropolitan area. The population was 13,303 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Randall County.

History

Canyon was founded in 1888 by L.G. Conner and named for nearby Palo Duro Canyon. The town was incorporated in 1910. The first post office opened in 1888.

Geography

Canyon is located at 35°51'25" North, 101°59'2" West (35.856944, -101.983889). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.2 square miles (13.4 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Canyon is home to West Texas A&M University, which is the largest employer in the city. Other major employers include the City of Canyon, Randall County, and the Canyon Independent School District. The city is also home to several retail stores, restaurants, and other businesses.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 12,875 people, 4,717 households, and 3,072 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,478.2 people per square mile (957.2/km2). There were 5,093 housing units at an average density of 986.2 per square mile (381.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 87.45% White, 1.45% African American, 0.90% Native American, 0.90% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 8.17% from other races, and 1.08% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 18.90% of the population.
There were 4,717 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.7% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.01.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 23.2% under the age of 18, 19.2% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 19.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 30 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $30,945, and the median income for a family was $37,945. Males had a median income of $27,945 versus $20,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,945. About 11.2% of families and 16.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 19.2% of those under age 18 and 11.2% of those age 65 or over.
