History
Motley County is located in the Texas Panhandle, in the northwest corner of the state. It was established in 1876 and named after Junius William Motley, a Confederate soldier who was killed in the Battle of Jenkins Ferry in Arkansas. The county was originally part of Bexar County, but was later divided into its own county.
The first settlers in Motley County were ranchers, who began arriving in the late 1870s. The county was officially organized in 1879, and the first county seat was established in Matador. The county seat was moved to Roaring Springs in 1882, and then to its current location in Matador in 1884.
The county was largely agricultural in its early years, with cotton, corn, and wheat being the main crops. Cattle ranching was also an important part of the economy. The Santa Fe Railroad arrived in the county in 1887, and this helped to spur economic growth.
