Hemphill County Summary
Hemphill County is a county located in the northern part of the state of Texas, in the United States. It is part of the Amarillo, Texas Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, the population was 3,807, making it the second-least populous county in Texas. The county seat is Canadian.
History
Hemphill County was created in 1876 from the Bexar District. It was named for John Hemphill, a justice of the Texas Supreme Court. The county was organized in 1891.
Geography
Hemphill County is located in the northern part of the Texas Panhandle. It is bordered by Wheeler County to the north, Roberts County to the east, Gray County to the south, and Carson County to the west. The county is located in the High Plains region of the Great Plains. The Canadian River forms the northern boundary of the county.
The terrain of Hemphill County is generally flat, with some rolling hills. The county is mostly covered in grassland, with some areas of mesquite and juniper. The highest point in the county is an unnamed hill in the southwestern part of the county, which has an elevation of 2,890 feet (880 m).
Economy
The economy of Hemphill County is largely based on agriculture and ranching. The county is home to several large ranches, including the Pitchfork Ranch, which is one of the largest ranches in the United States. The county is also home to several oil and gas fields, which provide jobs and revenue for the county.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 3,807 people, 1,521 households, and 1,039 families residing in the county. The population density was 4.3 people per square mile (1.7/km^2). There were 1,845 housing units at an average density of 2.1 per square mile (0.8/km^2). The racial makeup of the county was 92.2% White, 0.2% Black or African American, 0.7% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 5.2% from other races, and 1.6% from two or more races. 11.7% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 1,521 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.2% were married couples living together, 8.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.3% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.01.
In the county, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 23.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 20.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the county was $31,944, and the median income for a family was $37,917. Males had a median income of $27,917 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the county was $16,845. About 11.2% of families and 14.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 19.2% of those under age 18 and 11.2% of those age 65 or over.
