History
Gonzales County was established in 1836, and is named for Rafael Gonzales, the first governor of Coahuila y Tejas. The county was part of the original Mexican land grant of 1824, and was one of the first counties established in the Republic of Texas. The county was the site of the first battle of the Texas Revolution, the Battle of Gonzales, which took place in 1835.
