History

Franklin County was established in 1875, and was named after Benjamin Franklin. The county was originally part of Red River County, and was created out of parts of Titus, Lamar, and Hopkins counties. The first settlers in the area were Native Americans, and the first white settlers arrived in the early 1840s. The county was officially organized in 1876, and the first county seat was at Mount Vernon.
