Brazos County Summary
Brazos County, Texas is located in the east-central part of the state and is part of the Bryan-College Station metropolitan area. It is the 26th most populous county in Texas, with an estimated population of 226,609 in 2019. The county seat is Bryan, and the largest city is College Station.
History
Brazos County was established in 1841 and named after the Brazos River, which runs through the county. The county was originally part of the Mexican state of Coahuila y Tejas, and was part of the Stephen F. Austin colony. The county was organized in 1843, and the first county seat was Boonville. In 1846, the county seat was moved to Bryan, which was named after William Joel Bryan, a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence.
Geography
Brazos County is located in east-central Texas, and is bordered by Robertson County to the north, Burleson County to the east, Grimes County to the south, and Washington and Madison counties to the west. The county covers an area of 1,069 square miles, and is part of the Brazos River Valley. The terrain is mostly flat, with some rolling hills in the western part of the county. The county is home to several lakes, including Lake Bryan, Lake Somerville, and Lake Limestone.
