History

Byers was founded in 1887 by William Byers, a rancher from Missouri. He named the town after himself and it was incorporated in 1891. The town was originally a stop on the Fort Worth and Denver City Railway. The town grew quickly and by the early 1900s, it had a population of over 500 people.
Byers was a thriving agricultural community in the early 1900s. The town had a cotton gin, a bank, a hotel, a blacksmith shop, a livery stable, and several stores. The town also had a school, which was built in 1891.
Byers was a prosperous town until the Great Depression. The town's population declined and many businesses closed. The town was able to survive the depression and by the 1950s, it had a population of over 600 people.
