Abbott Summary
Abbott, Texas is a small town located in Hill County, Texas, United States. The population was 545 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Waco Metropolitan Statistical Area.
History
Abbott was founded in 1881 by the Hill County Land Company. The town was named after Joseph Abbott, a former Texas governor. The town was incorporated in 1882 and a post office was established in 1883.
In the early 1900s, Abbott was a thriving agricultural community. Cotton, corn, and other crops were grown in the area. The town also had a cotton gin, a grist mill, and a blacksmith shop.
In the 1920s, the town began to decline as the Great Depression hit the area. Many of the businesses closed and the population decreased.
In the 1940s, the town began to recover as the economy improved. The population increased and new businesses opened.

The economy of Abbott is largely based on agriculture. Cotton, corn, and other crops are grown in the area. The town also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 545 people, 212 households, and 145 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,816.7 people per square mile (700.3/km2). There were 233 housing units at an average density of 776.7 per square mile (299.7/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 81.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 15.3% from other races, and 2.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 28.2% of the population.
There were 212 households, out of which 33.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.4% were married couples living together, 11.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.5% were non-families. 28.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.58 and the average family size was 3.17.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.
