History
Sturgis was founded in 1818 by William Sturgis, a Revolutionary War veteran. The city was named after him, and was incorporated in 1837. Sturgis was the first county seat of Union County, and was the site of the first courthouse. The city was a major stop on the Louisville and Nashville Railroad, and was a major shipping point for tobacco and other agricultural products.
Geography
Sturgis is located at 37°25'25" North, 87°41'17" West (37.423, -87.688). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.3 square miles (3.4 km2), all land.
Economy
Sturgis is a small city with a limited economy. The city is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a pharmacy, and a few restaurants. The city is also home to a few manufacturing companies, including a furniture manufacturer and a plastics manufacturer.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,420.8 people per square mile (548.7/km2). There were 745 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 14.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.2% were non-families. 30.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older.
