History

Salem was founded in 1792 by a group of settlers from Virginia. The city was named after Salem, Virginia, the hometown of the settlers. The city was incorporated in 1820 and was designated as the county seat of Washington County.
In the late 19th century, Salem was a major center for the timber industry. The city was also home to a number of coal mines. In the early 20th century, the city was a major center for the tobacco industry.
