Sacramento Summary

Sacramento is a small town located in McLean County, Kentucky, United States. It is situated on the banks of the Green River, approximately 10 miles south of the county seat of Calhoun. The population was 545 at the 2010 census.

Geography

Sacramento is located at 37°14'45" North, 87°17'45" West (37.245833, -87.295833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all land.

History

Sacramento was founded in 1845 by a group of settlers from the nearby town of Calhoun. The town was named after the Sacramento River in California, which was named after the Spanish word for “sacrament”. The town was originally a farming community, but in the late 19th century, it became a center for the timber industry. The town was incorporated in 1891.

Economy

Sacramento’s economy is largely based on agriculture and timber. The town is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant. The town also has a post office and a bank.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 545 people, 212 households, and 149 families residing in the town. The population density was 890.3 people per square mile (344.3/km2). There were 229 housing units at an average density of 372.2 per square mile (143.7/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.45% White, 0.37% African American, 0.37% Native American, 0.18% Asian, 0.37% from other races, and 1.26% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.37% of the population.
