Owenton Summary

Owenton is a small town located in Owen County, Kentucky, United States. It is situated in the northern part of the state, about 40 miles northeast of Lexington. The population was 1,072 at the 2010 census.

History

Owenton was founded in 1817 by William Owenton, a Revolutionary War veteran. He named the town after himself and it was incorporated in 1820. The town was originally a trading post and a stop on the stagecoach route between Lexington and Cincinnati.
In the early 19th century, Owenton was a thriving agricultural center. The town was home to several mills, including a gristmill, a sawmill, and a woolen mill. The town also had a blacksmith shop, a tannery, and a distillery.
