Nicholasville Summary
Nicholasville is a city located in Jessamine County, Kentucky, United States. It is the county seat of Jessamine County and is located just south of Lexington. The population was 28,015 at the 2010 census.
Geography
Nicholasville is located at 37°53′N 84°35′W (37.88, -84.58). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.2 square miles (29.0 km2), of which 11.1 square miles (28.7 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km2) (0.54%) is water.
History
Nicholasville was founded in 1798 by William Nichols, a Revolutionary War veteran and surveyor. He named the town after himself and it was incorporated in 1837. The city was the site of a Civil War battle in 1862, when Confederate forces under General Edmund Kirby Smith defeated Union forces under General Mahlon D. Manson.
Economy
Nicholasville is home to several large employers, including Amazon, Walmart, and Toyota. The city is also home to several smaller businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services. The city is also home to several educational institutions, including the University of Kentucky, Eastern Kentucky University, and Bluegrass Community and Technical College.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 28,015 people, 10,945 households, and 7,541 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,521.2 people per square mile (973.2/km2). There were 11,845 housing units at an average density of 1,062.2 per square mile (410.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 87.2% White, 8.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 1.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.3% of the population.
There were 10,945 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 13.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.2% were non-families. 25.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 30.3% from 25 to 44, 23.2% from 45 to 64, and 12.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $45,945, and the median income for a family was $54,844. Males had a median income of $37,845 versus $27,890 for females.
