Newport Summary
Newport, Kentucky is a city located in Campbell County, Kentucky, United States. It is located on the Ohio River, directly across from Cincinnati, Ohio. The population was 15,273 at the 2010 census. Newport is part of the Cincinnati Metropolitan Area, which had a population of 2,114,580 in the 2010 census.
History
Newport was founded in 1795 by James Taylor Jr., and was originally known as Taylor's Landing. It was renamed Newport in 1796. The city was incorporated in 1834.
In the 19th century, Newport was a major port city, and was the site of the first commercial steamboat line in the United States. The city was also a major center for the production of whiskey and other spirits.
Geography
Newport is located at 39°5′3″N 84°30′2″W (39.084167, -84.500556). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), of which 4.1 square miles (10.6 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) is water.
Economy
Newport's economy is largely based on tourism and retail. The city is home to several large shopping centers, including Newport on the Levee, which features a variety of restaurants, shops, and entertainment venues. The city is also home to several large employers, including the Newport Aquarium, the Newport Central Catholic High School, and the Newport Independent School District.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 15,273 people, 6,717 households, and 3,845 families residing in the city. The population density was 3,717.3 people per square mile (1,437.2/km2). There were 7,541 housing units at an average density of 1,845.2 per square mile (715.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 87.2% White, 8.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 1.2% Asian, 0.7% from other races, and 2.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.3% of the population.
There were 6,717 households, out of which 24.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 37.2% were married couples living together, 14.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 43.7% were non-families. 36.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.22 and the average family size was 2.90.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 20.7% under the age of 18, 10.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $33,902, and the median income for a family was $41,945. Males had a median income of $31,945 versus $25,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $19,945. About 11.2% of families and 14.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 19.2% of those under age 18 and 9.2% of those age 65 or over.
