Mount Washington Summary
Mount Washington is a city located in Bullitt County, Kentucky, United States. It is part of the Louisville/Jefferson County Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 8,117 at the 2010 census.
History
Mount Washington was founded in 1814 by William and Mary Ann Smith. The city was named after the nearby Mount Washington, which was named after George Washington. The city was incorporated in 1867.
Geography
Mount Washington is located at 38°1′45″N 85°33′17″W (38.029167, -85.554722). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.2 square miles (13.4 km2), all land.
Economy
The economy of Mount Washington is largely based on the service industry. The city is home to several restaurants, retail stores, and other businesses. The city also has a number of manufacturing and industrial businesses.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 7,845 people, 3,072 households, and 2,220 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,521.2 people per square mile (586.3/km2). There were 3,232 housing units at an average density of 622.2 per square mile (240.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.45% White, 0.45% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.45% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.45% from other races, and 0.95% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.17% of the population.
There were 3,072 households, out of which 35.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.2% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 3.03.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 26.3% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 32.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 11.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $41,945, and the median income for a family was $48,958. Males had a median income of $35,945 versus $25,938 for females.
