The area that is now Morganfield was first settled in the early 1800s. The town was named after General Daniel Morgan, a Revolutionary War hero. The town was incorporated in 1854.
During the Civil War, Morganfield was a major supply depot for the Confederate Army. The town was also the site of a major battle in 1862, when Union forces under General Ulysses S. Grant attacked the Confederate forces in the area. The Union forces were victorious and the town was occupied by Union troops for the remainder of the war.
